Surtal Arts invites you to adorn the pavements of Market Square for the prosperity of the whole of derby in this season of light. Artists from Surtal will use Market Square, Derby on Saturday 12th November as a canvas to launch Festival of Light Derby Lantern Parade (which will take place during the following week on 18th November). The public is invited to help create a giant Rangoli pattern using traditional method of chalk art or Kolam. Kolam designs (similar to the pan-Indian artform of rangoli) are intricate decorative designs drawn by the people in chalk or rice flour in front of their homes, apartment blocks, temple, or business every morning anew. The designs can be simple or very large and intricate. They are drawn to invoke prosperity, invitation and welcome of guests. Colourful and detailed chalk & flower designs are also found on the streets and entranceways throughout India. Traditionally, rice flour was used which provides a meal to ants and other creatures symbolizing harmony. The term Rangoli is derived from the words "Rang" (meaning colour) and "Aavalli" (meaning row or array). Rangoli uses coloured chalks or sand and sometimes flowers to make intricate patterns for similar purposes of welcome and pride. Surtal Arts invites everyone to come to Market Square on Saturday 12th November (11am-2pm) armed with a WHITE chalk and help create a giant Rangoli using traditional patterns, design, bring prosperity to the whole of Derby and help launch Festival of Light event which is on18th November 2011.
