Community Work

At Surtal we have over 16 years of specialist experience working in the Community.  We are experts in providing stimulating South Asian arts activities for hard-to-reach groups which include Asian womens' groups, young people at risk, young offenders and asylum seekers.

Surtal began in 1994 as an organisation born in and working for the Community.  It's initial aim was to work from within the Community to provide quality arts provision for local people, to enable creative outlets for them and to keep South Asian arts and culture alive amongst a multi-cultural society.  And even though we have grown to include education, youth, and professional development in our portfolio, a significant part of our work remains in the Community.

Our work in Community includes weekly dance and music classes, delivering issue-based commission projects, special workshops, performances and holding arts events

We are reknown for our numerous crossover projects between Community, Education and Youth.  At Surtal we never limit our work and believe that creative opportunities should be accessible to all!  Check out our biggest crossover projects:  South Asian Arts Festival and Festival of Light.
