Bollyworld

Bollyworld was a project which had been brewing in the minds of Surtal's core creatives for several years, it just took the right balance of artists and young people to make it happen!  Enter Sonia Sabri, a leading contramporary South Asian artist in the UK and renown across the world for her unique fusion of classical Indian dance with funky urban moves.

Sonia Sabri

In June/July 2010 Sonia worked with five dance choreographers from Derby to create a unique performance which blended five very different dance styles. Specialists were Nisha Nath, Vijay Mehay, Nathan Geering, Bryony Mylroie Smith and Will Garner whose styles ranged from Bhangra to Indian Classical to Contemporary to Hip-Hop.

The five choreographers each created a section inspired by the natural elements with participation of over 30 young people, which joined together in a spectacular Bollywood-themed celebration performance. The aim of the project was to celebrate different dance styles and the creative potential for cross cultural collaboration. With its Bollywood undercurrent and celebratory feel, Bollyworld exploded onto the stage of the South Asian Arts Festival in Derby... the perfect platform for such a unique piece!
