Artistic Director

Location: Our activities are focused in East Midlands. The applicant should be available for one contact day per week to work with team members (if requested by the Board). Applicants with flexible working preferences will be welcomed.

Duration / Salary / Hours: The appointment is for 12 months, and may be extended, subject to funding. It is a part-time role (18.5 hours per week). Salary : £21,164

​

Description: This is an excellent opportunity for an established or rising artistic/creative leader to make their mark, innovating a programme of work that can make a real difference to the cultural landscape of Derby and the region. Our new Artistic Director will:

 

  • Curate and deliver a programme of performances, concerts and events that showcase our artistic network, develop audience loyalty and support a sustainable future, including for example:

    • Large-scale ‘big cultural moments’ in Derby, for example, the Derby Season of Light (lead by Surtal Arts) and 50:50 Celebrations (lead by partners)

    • A rolling cycle of new work /productions

    • A framework for the identification and development of new talent

  • Work to better understand the aspirations, challenges, and cultural needs of British South Asian young people in Derby, ensuring future programmes are relevant, empowering, and audience-led.

  • Develop opportunities to expand our reach and engagement in East Midlands and beyond – particularly amongst new audiences, in education and with new and existing partners.

  • Discover, nurture and champion home grown talent – including managing classes and workshops.

  • Create opportunities for established South Asian heritage artists through commissioned work and showcasing.

  • Engage actively with stakeholders (local council, funding bodies, community leaders, Board members).

  • Support the business development manager in the design of resources to deliver Surtal Arts’ ambitions and the preparation of funding applications.

 

Requirements

We are looking for someone who can both shape this new role and deliver tangible creative outputs.


Essential criteria include:

  • Strong leadership capability – you have proven experience in developing arts and heritage programmes for the community, education and/or sector.

  • Experience working in South Asian heritage arts and culture.

  • Experience producing and delivering cross-cultural work.

  • Experience delivering large scale outdoor events.

  • Strategic thinker – you will have a good track record of work that meets audience and business needs, works with partners and includes diverse communities.

  • Self-motivated and proactive – you will be working closely with the business development manager but will be responsible for the development of the artistic programme. The Board welcomes fresh and innovative ideas.

  • An excellent communicator – you will be capable of engaging effectively with stakeholders, artists, our target audiences, communities, and the Board.

  • Dynamic and flexible – although you will be developing a programme schedule, we recognise the need to respond to short lead-time requests from time to time.

  • Has good knowledge of the creative sector nationally, regionally, county, and locally.

  • Skills in arts project management – including managing budgets, artists, audiences, planning, evaluation and scheduling etc.

Desirable criteria include:

  • Knowledge of modern marketing and PR

  • Experience in writing funding bids and producing annual reports.

  • Bi/multilingual in a South Asian language – preferably Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi.

  • Higher education qualification in a creative field

Business Development Manager

Location:  Our activities are focused in East Midlands. The applicant should be available for one contact day per week to work with team members (if requested by the Board). Applicants with flexible working preferences are welcomed.

Duration / Salary / Hours: The appointment is for twelve months, and may be extended, subject to funding. It is a part-time role. £9,360 per annum (based on 12hr p/week).

​

Description: The Business Development Manager is responsible for:

 

  • Working closely with the Artistic Director, providing support in the arrangement of events and activities.

  •  Taking the lead in identifying funding opportunities, including the development and submission of grant applications, Trust & Foundations, Crowd funding and business sponsorship.

  • Developing a project framework for managing and measuring principal strategic projects.

  • Income /payments management (in conjunction with Board member)

  • Identifying and engaging with potential partners and sponsors.

  • Forming relationships with key stakeholders, e.g local council, business sponsors, community leaders, schools, funding bodies etc.

  • Strengthening existing processes for working with key suppliers (eg marketing, PR, photography etc)

  • Audit and strengthen existing data collection processes.

  • Develop Partnership and Sponsorship packs.

  • Ad hoc projects requested /approved by Board

 

Requirements

We are looking for someone who can both shape this new role and deliver tangible business outputs.


Essential criteria include:

  • Experience in fundraising – you will have a track record making successful grant applications ie local authority, Arts Council, trusts and foundations, donations etc.

  • Experience in securing business sponsorships.

  • Strategic thinker – focussed on developing effective processes and relationships that serve a sustainable future for the organisation and audiences.

  • Self-motivated and proactive – skilled at identifying business problems and developing solutions.

  • Organised, dynamic and flexible – capable of responding to business development opportunities as they arise, making use of in-house and external resource and expertise.

  • Excellent communicator, negotiator and presenter – you will be capable of engaging effectively with stakeholders, artists, our target audiences, communities and the Board.

  • Knowledge and links with Derby’s communities (South Asian and wider).

  • Strong project management skills – managing budgets, cashflow, planning, report writing, pitch/presentation, resource management.

  •  Good knowledge of modern marketing and PR, and ability to commission and manage external experts in this field.

  • Experience developing systems for activity monitoring and evaluation.

Desirable criteria include:

  • Passion for arts and heritage– being a champion for this creativity can support the relationships and opportunities you will develop as part of this role.

  • Awareness of local youth, education and family agendas.

  • Professional networks across the region and sector.

  • Bi/multilingual in a South Asian language – preferably Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi.
