Our volunteers are vital in supporting our work. We aim to deliver high quality arts for our participants and audiences and make their experiences rewarding and enriching. Please see below, we have a range of exciting opportunities for you to get involved in our Derby Season Of Light , and some of which do not require you to have any experience, just a willingness and commitment to help and learn. Lantern Parade Team
There are several volunteer roles needed on Lantern Parade Day to make sure it's well organised and everyone is welcomed, (especially our school children) and feels safe.
Steward Role
Stewards are needed to make sure everyone feels welcome and stays safe during the parade. Stewards are only required on Lantern Parade day, from 2pm to 5.30pm.
Experience is not needed.
You'll need to be super friendly and happy to chat to strangers. Stewards work together in pairs, carrying lanterns and walking alongside the parade.
You will attend a Steward's Briefing session on the day of the parade ie procedures such as route, lost children and first aid.
Schedule: 2.00pm Attend briefing meeting at St.Peter’s Church, Community Hall.
Sign in and collect high viz jacket.
Supporting schools - Some of you will be allocated to a school. You will be given a banner with that school’s name on it. You will hold that banner high, so that schools can see you and all the teachers, parents and children will come to you and you will greet them and line them up in two rows. You will register your school
with the Lantern Parade coordinators. You will count all the schools children and register the number with the coordinator. Give your school banner to a teacher and you carry a lantern and walk with your school when parade starts.
Lantern Carrier
You will be given a lantern to carry in the parade. While walking in the parade, your job is to ensure everyone is the parade is safe and look out for any issues. Make sure you know who to call or flag up in an emergency. We will go through these during the briefing at the start.
4.00pm Procession starts.
5.00 Parade Finish.
Collect all the Surtal Arts lanterns from the parents or people and put them in one of the coordinator’s van or carry lanterns back to St. Peter’s Church.
5.30/5.45pm Return to St. Peter’s Church.
Have debrief & return all high viz jackets.
Please Bring...
Warm clothes; suitable for cold and potentially wet weather.
Good shoes: you'll be on your feet for walking.
Snacks & water; there will be hot tea/coffee during the briefing at the start.
Please don't bring valuables.
