Join us for the Derby Lantern Parade! Lanterns of all shapes and sizes will illuminate a path through Derby city centre, spreading joy as we celebrate being out of lockdown.  

 

More than 250 school pupils (Allenton Community Primary, Da Vinci Academy, Firs Primary, Grampian Primary and Redwood Junior Schools) and various community group members who have created lanterns in our workshops will the Derby Lantern Parade leading to Derby’s Christmas lights switch-on this Saturday November 13.

 

Here's what's planned...

4.00pm

Derby Lantern Parade illuminates and begins with dance & drumming performance at the the Spot Sclupture, 105 St Peters St, Derby DE1 2AD.
 

4.10pm

Parade starts led by the Mighty Dhol drummers and a spectacular show-stopping lantern sculpture created by artist Stephanie Coley. Followed by Derby LIVE's ‘Sleeping Beauty’ pantomime characters.

4.25pm (approx)

Brilliant Bhangra dancers will dazzle with an exciting performance outside Tesco (Cornmarket)

4.50pm (approx)

Parade arrives at the Council House in front of the Christmas Light's Stage (Derby City Council building, Corporation Street, DE1 2FS).  A cheerful welcome and chance to capture the special moment!

5.00pm (approx) 

Spectacular cross-cultural performance of 'Our City of Making' - an Indian-Ukranian dance finale celebrating Derby. Followed by Christmas Lights show.

Parade Route  

The parade will start from The Spot Sclupture, 105 St Peters St, Derby DE1 2AD at 4.10pm and weave its way through the city centre, along St Peter’s Street, Cornmarket and through Derby Market Place to the Christmas Lights stage outside Derby City Council building, Corporation Street DE1 2FS, approx at 4.50pm, ready for the party to really get started.

Want to join the parade?

Anyone who has taken part in Surtal Arts' lantern making workshop is welcome to join the parade.  If you have any queries please contact us.

Please note, no glass lanterns or real flames will be allowed in the parade.

Lantern Parade Finale

The spectacle will continue with a performance of ‘Our City of Making’ on the stage - an amazing high energy dance fusion performed by Surtal Arts, Naachda Sansaar and Hoverla Dance Ensemble. More about the piece here.

Singer songwriter, Simon Webbe (Blue boy band) then headlines the show as part of the Christmas Light Switch On organised by Derby LIVE. Smooth Radio’s Gareth Evans will compère the show.

Derby Lantern Parade is produced by Surtal Arts with support of Derby LIVE and Derby City Council’s events arm. 

IMPORTANT! Covid Safety

We understand the severity of COVID-19 and how important it is to take every measure possible to keep the public safe and follow all government guidelines.   We want to ensure safety of everyone who joins the lantern parade.  Therefore, we will be complying with government's guidelines.  Attending event during Covid pandemic time we recommend:

  • You continue to wear a face covering.

  • To socially distance as much as possible and walk within your family group or schools.

  • Please be respectful of other parade attendees, organisers and volunteers.

  • Do not swap lanterns with anyone who are not your family members.

  • You use hand sanitisers.

  • We encourage you to use test and trace.

  • PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE PARADE IF YOU HAVE COVID SYMPTOMS.

 

Our volunteers stewards will carry sanitisers and spare masks. 

Volunteers

If you can spare 3hrs (3.30-6pm) on the day, we will really appreciate your time as you will help us run the lantern parade safely and smoothly.  Variety of roles available on the day from stewarding to assisting the schools to helping artists backstage.  Please get in touch if can volunteer.
