Diwali Derby
Since 2001 Surtal Arts annual Diwali in Derby showcase engaged school children in inspiring productions about the Indian Festival of Light. In 2006 our successful educational programme was commissioned to roll out to neighbouring cities, Nottingham and Leicester, to make Diwali a Three Cities celebration.
We created a unique new, collaborative South Asian dance, drama and music project, working with international and regional artists. We lead a series of community and educational residencies and artistic master classes. The finale was a fantastic major performance showcase in each city, with live music, dancing, puppetry bespoke costumes, set design and audience participation. Approximately 3,000 children directly participated in Kahani Diwali.
