​ Invited by Sinfonia Viva, Surtal Community Choir is super excited to perform at Darley Park Concert 2025, Derby on Sunday 31 August, 6pm. Directed by Kamalbir Singh, the choir group will present 'Jai Ho ', a medly of iconic Bollywood songs that incorporate multiple Indian languages, reflecting India's diverse linguistic landscape. It's a great opportunity for Surtal Arts to mark South Asian Heritage Month at a mainstream and celebrate diversity of India. Darley Park Concert is organised by Derby Live. About Surtal Community Choir
As part of Arts in Health, Surtal Community Choir was formed during Covid time to combat social isolation and mental health and well being in 2020. Immediately the group bonded and formed frinedship through their lve of singing and poetry. The group continues to meet fortnightly on Sundays and now has 15 regular members who comes from diverse parts of India and Pakistan. The group is free to join and all welcome from age 13+.
The choir group sing in Bengali, Gujrati, Punjabi, Tamil, Hindi and Urdu. The choir group's first public performance was in 2021 when it organised a Rememberance Sunday event honouring South Asian soldiers who lost their lives in First and Second World Wars. The group sang iconic patriotic songs like 'Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo' (Lata Mangheskar 1962) , 'Aye Mere Payare Watan' (Kabuliwala (1961) and so on. The group received a lot of support from the community who appreciated the gesture. The choir group continues to honour for our brave South Asian soldiers every year and now it has become part of Derby Season of Light (DSOL) annual festival. DSOL is organised by Surtal Arts in partnership with other arts and cultural partners from Derby and Derbyshire between October to December.

In 2024 our choir group was invited to perform at the International Women's Day and at Derby city's main Rememberance Sunday organised by British Legion and Derby City Council.
In 2025 the Choir group was invited to perform at the Holocaust Memorial Day.

If you like singing in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali and Sinhalese for pleasure or professionally, why not join our group! It’s a small informal group and open to all men and women from age 13+. Its FREE.
​
We meet every fortnightly on Sundays (2-4pm) and sing together for pleasure and sometime for community events. We often invite professional artist to train our voice and direct us if we are performing at a public events. Everyone knows that singing is good for our mind and soul. One of the most notable impacts of singing is the immediate boost in your mood. It's also a place to make new friends and socialise.
You do not need any experience or special skill to join us! You just need to love singing or willingness to have a go! It's also fine if you just wish to come and listen! You will be very welcome. Please get in touch.
